Pet Stories

I love the fur-babes! My lifestyle doesn't suit having one of my own right now.  I get my pet fix by fostering dogs for local shelters, and pet sitting both in my home and in homes of home/pet owners.  I also have NO SHAME in asking total strangers to pet their pups!

Meet the fur-babies!

Mia & Drax

AVAILABLE!

The Artemis Project

We foster for multiple rescue organizations in our community.  Drax and Mia are from The Artemis Project (TAP) Rescue.

They officially organized in 2019 with a mission to come together and provide care for animals in the River Valley. TAP utilizes foster families as well as their physical location with kennels to care for both cats and dogs.

You can find them on their website, or on facebook.  You can find the application to adopt or foster on their page as well as information to donate.

Drax and Mia are absolute sweethearts! These babes are super easy to care for.  A decent sized yard, doggy door, and couch cuddles will make them pretty content! Throw in a couple car rides and a few walks a week and you will win them over heart and soul!

Transition:

Drax and Mia came to us in May. They had only been in the shelter for a couple of weeks. They quickly re-acclimated to living in a house and they love it!

Mia didn't take long to figure out the doggy door; Drax took a bit longer and some bacon motivation to get going. (To be fair, he does have to low crawl a little to get through, so there's that!)  By July 4th they both had it down pat. Speaking of Independence day, that's when we learned that they LOVE the boom-booms! They literally bolt through the doors so they can see the fireworks.  (They do the same with thunder!)

Mia has a happy and playful personality.  She doesn't mind kids playing all over and around her. That chunky monkey will take belly rubs from anyone!

Drax is a bit more reserved in the beginning but loves getting the pets as well.  Once you are in his circle, you are golden. He will give a low growl warning if someone approaches me (particularly male) that he doesn't know, but Drax has never snapped, or been "aggressive" to anyone the whole time we've had him.

A day in the life...

They will acclimate to your hours, I was getting up at 0530 for several weeks and they started doing the same but after a week of my schedule adjusting, they did too.

We get up in the morning to Drax whining because he's awake and wants us to be.  Then we're greeted by his Chewbacca imitation (it's hilarious) letting us know how excited he is that we are up. They get their outside time and breakfast then we snuggle.  Yes, I know, but whatever, we can have morning snuggle time if I want!

FYI - If for some reason we have to skip morning snuggles, I will hear about it.  There will be whining, confused looks, and I will feel massive guilt.

This is the part of the day where the pups recognize if it's a work day or not. When I'm in gym/casual clothes, they cry and want to go with us, if I'm dressed for work, they lay on the couch and couldn't care less if I am leaving.

We have cameras in the house so I can check on them while we are at work.  Spoiler alert - they sleep most of the day! They do entertain themselves while we are gone. Sometimes this means our foot stool or area rug is moved when we come home, but major damage has never been an issue. Well, except to their beds - they lasted maybe a month. Suggest Carhart or some other very strong material bedding for them.

Their favorite toys are their bones. We get them big bones with some trimming still on them. Long after finishing off the trimming they still enjoy chewing on the bones.  I've yet to see a stuffy or squeaky that will survive them. Ha!

The highlight of the day is coming home to these babes.  They are thrilled to see us! Mia does this thing where she jumps a little but not much and snaps her mouth in the air like she's trying to catch a fly. (she doesn't ever bite, it's just her way of showing excitement).

We feed them supper (usually a 12 hour gap from AM feed) and chill together in the evenings.

They sleep in the living room on the couch. When we had beds for them, we brought them in the bedroom at night but we started leaving the door and letting them choose. We've never let them on our bed, not because we mind, but we don't know what their forever family will choose. (This was supposed t be the rule with the couch too, but I couldn't stick with that one.)

Exercise & Outings:

The LOVE going on walks. They get super excited when they see the harnesses coming out because they know it's either walk or car ride and they love both.

Getting on harnesses was a bit tough in the beginning (from their excitement) but they have learned that if they sit still, we get out the door faster.  Winning!

Sometimes we go for walks in the evening (depending on the weather). I don't mind walking them alone at night because NO ONE approaches me when I have them.

Drax will jump in the jeep but doesn't love the floor mat in the truck so he needs a boost for that.  Mia puts her paws up and impatiently waits for me to pick her backside up. She's a mess!

They do great on car rides. Really great! Except for the farts. Whew! Prepare to roll down the windows! What? I can be honest here, right? I mean, if you're planning to being these pups into your family, you should know it all!

Other random bits:

As for their diet, Mia gained a few covid pounds on her arrival so I've laid off the scrambled egg in their breakfast every morning.  Between them they eat three cups of food both in the morning and evening.  We use about one bag 50lb bag of Purina Pro dog food a month. We feed them at the same time and in separate bowls but they don't have food aggression.  Occasionally they get a bit growly with each other but they sort it out alright.

Once in a while they even get where they won't let the other one in or out the door - it's just a sibling thing - they always get over it.

Their backstory:

Mia and Drax were adopted together as puppies.  They grew up in a home with three children and their grown ups.  They were surrendered in May so we could find them a family that had more space and time for them. Their family said their yard was too small, and Mia kept getting out. They had to be away extra long hours for work and school activities too. Since they didn't have a doggy door, the pups had to be outside unless the weather was extreme. It's a tough decision to surrender a fur-family member. We'll keep them comfortable here until we find just the right home for them. Will it be you?
